Gus Franco’s Pizza Review – Lower Burrell, PA

Location and First Impressions

Gus Franco’s in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, made a great first impression. There was plenty of parking, and the place itself was well-kept and inviting. Inside, you can see the wood stacked next to a true wood-fired oven, which instantly set the tone. This wasn’t just for show. They are really doing wood-fired pizza, and it shows in the crust.

The space felt comfortable and clean, and I would go back again today without a second thought. If you find yourself nearby, it’s a spot worth checking out.

Margherita Pizza – 6.8

The Margherita had a strong basil presence. It wasn’t subtle, but it worked. The cheese didn’t offer much flavor. It was fairly neutral. The crust, though, was the standout feature. It had excellent char and that satisfying wood-fired texture that sets great pizza apart from average.

A 6.8 is a good score for me. That means it’s noticeably better than average and something I would absolutely order again.

3

Pepperoni Pizza – 7.1

This pie stood out a bit more. The pepperoni had a citrusy brightness that was unexpected and really enjoyable. It brought a fresh contrast to the richness. Again, the cheese didn’t jump out, but the crust delivered. It was deeply charred, evenly cooked, and had minimal grease.

At 7.1, this was a very good pizza. Not elite, but worth going a little out of the way to get.

Portion Size Warning

The pizzas here are smaller than you might expect. Each one was cut into six slices, and they felt more like personal pies than large pizzas. If I had known the size ahead of time, I probably would have ordered four instead of two.

Based on feel, I’d say it takes three or four of these to equal a typical large pizza from a chain or standard shop. Keep that in mind when ordering, especially if you’re feeding a group.

Overall Take

Gus Franco’s is a solid place for pizza. The crust is the highlight, the setting is clean and welcoming, and they really do wood-fired pizza right.

Both pies were well above average. The Margherita scored a 6.8, the Pepperoni a 7.1. These are strong scores in my system and reflect good pizza. I’m glad I went, and I’d be happy to go again.
